Call for Artist Submissions for “Hydrology”

Posted: 09.29.2009

Chelsea Center for the Arts announces a call for submissions of 2-D artworks for its HYDROLOGY exhibit.  This exhibit is co-sponsored by Legacy Land Conservancy and Huron River Watershed Council.

HYDROLOGY: The endless cycle of water—from sea to vapor to rain and ice and back to rivers, lakes, and oceans—is the theme for this exhibition at the Chelsea Center for the Arts (CCA). Co-sponsored by the Huron River Watershed Council (HRWC) and the Legacy Land Conservancy, the exhibit will explore humans’ relationship to water and to the natural cycles of the planet. Symbolizing purity, sustenance, tranquility, power, movement, and continuity, water is a source of life as well as destruction and death. Its surface serves as a metaphor for self-relfection and contemplation. Humans rely on water and take it for granted. We revere it, pollute it, misuse it, and fight over it. It is easily accessible and inexpensive to some while nearly out of reach to others.

Hydrology is the science that deals with the waters of Earth - their properties, behavior, and distribution. As the science of hydrology informs our development and management of water resources, art also informs and inspires our relationship to this vital life force. Artists with an affinity toward nature, especially landscape painters, have chosen water as a primary subject because of its reflective beauty and emotive qualities. Today, artists from many genres use water to explore themes of renewal, conservation, ecology, consumption, pollution, and waste.

For this exhibition, the Chelsea Center for the Arts is partnering with the Huron River Watershed Council (HRWC) and the Legacy Land Conservancy. The HRWC is a non-profit organization that works to inspire people to protect the Huron River system. The HRWC is a respected voice for protection of the Huron River and its tributary streams, lakes, wetlands, and groundwater. The Legacy Land Conservancy is Michigan’s oldest local land conservancy. For 38 years, it has worked with private landowners to protect water, farms, and nature - here, where we live.
